A Rhetorical Analysis of Barack Obamas Interfaith Prayer...
December 14, 2012 was a heartbreaking day for America, as twenty children and six adults lost their lives in a school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. Two days later, President Barack Obama addressed the nation with an interfaith prayer vigil at Newtown High School to help remember those who had lost their lives, and also to convince the nation that changes need to be made. Obama asked America to make an effort to prevent future tragedies such as this one by caring for our children and using our power to help those around us. Through the use of eulogy, appealing to emotions, and structure, the speech attempts to persuade its audience, America, to make an attempt to avoid future tragedies in order to protect our citizens and to help make America a safer place. Due to the misfortune of this event, Barack Obamas speech was a eulogy. He used this style to honor the victims who had lost their lives in this shooting, as well as touch on previous tragedies such as those in Tucson, Aurora, and Oak Creek. After quoting scripture, Obama opened his speech by saying, We gather here in memory of twenty beautiful children and six remarkable adults. He honored the victims by giving his love and prayers, and by naming each of the victims who have lost their lives in the shooting. Cultural Diversity in London - 1162 Words
The phrase ââ¬Å"British cultureâ⬠is often used carelessly, as if it completely and comprehensively defines all of the 63 million people living in Great Britain as well as their culture. People who use terms such as this either willingly or unconsciously forget the fact that Great Britain is a culturally diverse country, the biggest representative of this being its largest and most populated city ââ¬â London. In order to understand things better, we should take a few steps backwards and attempt to define these two important terms ââ¬â (1) culture and (2) cultural diversity. The Right To Die Essays (1131 words) - Euthanasia, Medical Ethics
The Right to Die Modern medical technology has made it possible to extend the lives of many far beyond when they would have died in the past. Death, in modern times, often ensures a long and painful fall where one loses control both physically and emotionally. Some individuals embrace the time that modern technology buys them; while others find the loss of control overwhelming and frightening. They want their loved ones to remember them as they were not as they have become. Some even elect death to avoid burdens of lingering on. They also seek assistance in doing so from medicine. The demands for assisted suicide and euthanasia are increasing (Kass 17). These issues raise many questions, legal and ethical. Although neither assisted suicide and euthanasia are legal, many people believe they should be. A great number of those people may never be faced with the decision, but knowing the option would be there is a comfort (Jaret 46). For those who will encounter the situation of loved ones on medication, being treated by physicians, sometimes relying on technical means to stay alive arises a great moral conflict. I wish to explore this topic on ethical, not legal issues. Do people have a right to choose death? More in particular, are euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide morally legitimate? Euthanasia involves a death that is intended to benefit the person who dies, and requires a final act by some other person, for example, a doctor. Physician-assisted suicide, which requires a final act by the patient, can also be undertaken for the good of that patient. The essential point is that both involve intentionally ending a human life (Emanuel 521). But how, some ask, can we ever allow people to intentionally end human lives (even their own lives) without degrading human life? How, others ask, can we simply prevent people from deciding when to end their own lives without denying people the freedom so essential to the value of a human life? As these questions suggests, the debate about the right to choose death may appear to present a stand-off between people who endorse life's true value, and those who think life's value depends on the interests, judgments, and choices of the person whose life it is. Through self identification individuals evaluate their own lives and its quality through their own values and belief systems. In order to maintain human dignity, the public has to respect these evaluations and allow individuals to act in accordance to their values. Hence euthanasia should become legalized. The major assumption in this argument is that the individuals are fully competent and capable of decision making. The arguments against making euthanasia legal center on two points. The first is the fear that mercy killing will open the door to abuse, allowing a way to kill unwanted people. The second is the Hippocratic Oath, Physicians must not kill (Meier 1195). On the other hand, death in three or four days through starvation and dehydration-passive euthanasia, which is both legal and ethical and is a standard way of easing a terminally ill patient out of the world at his or her request is not the most pleasant way to die. Once the decision to allow death has been made between physician, patient, and family, what is the ethical difference between giving a more painless death? Where is the abuse once the decision has been made to permit death to occur under controlled circumstances? People often ask why is it normal, and completely appropriate, for a veterinarian to put an aged, suffering animal to sleep with a lethal injection but not appropriate for humans. The answer has to be that we are different from animals because we have classified ourselves as such. This creates a problem. A physician can morally, ethically, and legally allow someone to starve to death. This death is going to take place over a few days. Would not that be the time for an instantaneous death by injection? A physician is extending the period of suffering by pulling tubes instead of administering injections. Being here in Italy I realized that there are a lot of differences between the Americans and the Italians. Some of them are kind of difficult to adjust with, being that I have gotten extremely comfortable in the situation that I was brought up in, and having to make a major transformation it's hard. Throughout this paper I am going to give off a few examples of the different cultural lifestyles. In America when people go to purchase something from a store, restaurant, or even just to pay for the services that they have received; they always do a cash exchange by hand to hand. If someone was to lay their payment down and expect the other side to pick it up, that would be a form of disrespect. Now as for in Italy, when paying for anything, they always lay the money, or whatever type of payment they are making, on the counter. The first time I experienced that I just stood there with my hand out, but that is their culture. When it comes to breakfast in the states, Americans tend to throw down in the kitchen. They make eggs, grits, pancakes, biscuits, sausages, and bacon; along with that they will have a glass of orange juice, or even both milk. Opposed to Italians, they tend to go out and buy something or sometimes do not even eat the morning. When they do decide to, they eat sweets. They will have some sort of croissant filled with an extremely sweet flavoring with very little cup of coffee or even hot chocolate. Now don't get it twisted with American hot chocolate that consist of milk or water with a chocolate based power; Italian hot chocolate is just that, melted down chocolate put into a cup. Driving in the two different countries are different also. First off in America the odometer goes off miles per hour. Here in Italy they go off of kilometers. In states, you will find stop lights every three blocks or so on main streets and/or side streets, if not a stop sign. In Italy they have "round abouts" (I am not sure of the correct term) and signs that tell you where u cannot enter. I have yet to see a stop sign here, you have to use better judgment when driving on the Italian roads; they have "the need for speed". Lastly in America you will find all different types, shapes, and sizes of vehicles. In Italy, you will fine different types, shapes, but mainly all the same sizes. They tend to drive more of compacted cars, due to the smaller roads. In states their roads are much larger. When it comes to clubs and bars, Italy and America have different standards. In America, when you go out to a bar or club they "card" you, to be sure you are of age to be there. In Italy, they just let you in the club or bar, so you will find thirteen year olds in there partying with grown people. Another thing that I found was completely different is the way the drinks are paid for. Here in Italy they give you a paper card, and every time you buy a drink or coat check they punch the amount on the card. Now in America you pay for your drinks and coat check up front. Buying sneakers in the two countries are different also. Italians tend to buy their shoes as if they have already been worn. They are brand new, but when purchased out of the store they look scuffed up or some dirty way. Americans buy their shoes pure. And when they get to the point where they look scuffed or old, they have to go out and get another brand new pair. Throughout this paper you have read a few of the differences that Italy and America have. So hopefully it is put well enough to understand why it is difficult to adjust to.

Like in most developing countries, a prominent political issue that the Ivory Coast faces is corruption in the government. The leaders of the Ivory Coast are every thing but eaders. They are incompetent, not trustworthy, and genuinely do not care to govern the country in the interest of the common good of the citizens. (http:// mw. . africaw. com/) In 2011 the World Bank conducted a study with the intention of ranking the most corrupt countries in order, it was found that in Africa the Ivory Coast was ranked number 38 out of 49 African countries. In 2010, transparency International ranked it 130th out of 176 countries in 2011 in its Corruption Perceptions Index. The government has a tendency to misuse grants that are given to hem in order to better their country which contributes to the corruption that their country faces today. The Ivorians have experienced a great deal of suffering due to corruption including destroyed regions and deaths in their families. (economist. com) The media in the Ivory Coast is beginning to create advertisements in order to make everyone aware of corruption and how it is negatively affecting the citizens of Cote dIvoire. : In addition to this an American government agency committee entitled Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) that aids poor countries recover from overty, this committee will attempt to aid the Ivory Coast once they meet certain benchmark requirements, with one dominant requirement being to invest in the people and decrease corruption. ( economist. com/) Cote dIvoire is blessed with an abundant amount of natural resources which helps stimulate their economy, but with such a low literacy rate in their country, it is nearly impossible for everyone to prosper and benefit from these resources. The education of a nation drastically affects their progress economically, because ignorance leads to bad ecisions. By having a literacy rate of 48. 7% in males and about 38. 6% in females (africaw. com), the Ivory Coast will remain in a state of an unstable economy unless their education improves. Their low literacy rate means that they do not have a sufficient amount of people who are able to aid in creating ways to make use of their natural resources that would improve their economy with stability. Low education also hurts the Ivorians economically because most women do not use contraceptives during intercourse, which leads to many pregnancies occurring in women that are ot prepared to have children. With unprepared births comes poverty because women that are uneducated are more likely to be poor and have the responsibility of not only taking care of themselves, but their children as well. According to africaw. com The Ivory Coast is one of the poorest countries in the world with about 50% of the country living below the poverty line. Their literacy rates are worse than that of most African countries, which is why their rate of teenage pregnancy and HIW AIDS is significantly high (because they are ignorant to the negative consequences of ases in the Ivory Coast has led to many deaths among their citizens. This disease spreads to citizens in various ways: mother-to-child, unprotected sexual intercourse, and quickly occurs in key populations of individuals including men who have sex with men (MSM), sex workers and people who inject drugs. It is bottom heavy meaning there is a significant amount of young people compared to the amount of old people. (unesco. rg) Studies have shown that the adult population of citizens between ages 20 to 29 years old are the most affected by HIVI AIDS, and although it is difficult now to forecast the dynamics of the epidemic in C?Ã ¶te dIvoire because of the multitude and complexity of factors to be taken into account (Garenne, 1996), the increase in HIV prevalence among pregnant women in Abidjan over the years is particularly worrying. These numbers are appalling in the way that they relate to the citizens in the Ivory Coast, because when affected mothers ave children, the chil dren will then be born with HIV and continue the spread of this deleterious disease. The spread of HIVI AIDS essentially serves as a gender issue primarily because the disease is more prominent in women than men. According to unaids. org the chances of women being HIV positive is eight times greater than men. This wide gender gap is prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa because of gender-based violence. Women are not economically independent from older men, therefore they must rely on them for survival which unfortunately increases their chances of getting HIV/AIDS because of their participation of sexual intercourse with these men. Older men tend to have had multiple sex partners and as a result they tend to spread HIW AIDS to women. Women are also at greater risk to having this disease because they have a greater biological susceptibility, meaning that the greater exposed surface area in the female genital tract compared to the male genital tract, higher concentrations of HIV in seminal fluids than in vaginal fluids, the larger amount of semen than vaginal fluids exchanged during intercourse, and greater potential for njury to the cell wall during intercourse for women compared to men (Moss et al. 991; Pettifor et al. 2004).
